Turner Marine Limited is a Ghanaian registered company that is engaged in the provision of marine logistics and support services, upstream oil and gas services and procurement services. The company was incorporated in December 2019 and issued with a certificate of incorporation no. CS 27374209 and a certificate to commence business dated 27th December
2019. Turner Marine entered the Sierra Leonean market to explore opportunities in shipping and mining in August 2021. With a focus on shipping and mining, Turner Marine engaged the Sierra Leone National Shipping Company Limited (SLNSC) in a series of business development initiatives. In December 2021, SLNSC forwarded an enquiry from bauxite miner, VIMETCO to Turner Marine. Turner Marine undertook detailed assessment of VIMETCO’s Nitti Port infrastructure and stock stacking stations, the navigational corridor from Nitti Port to the sea and the offshore sea areas
VIMETCO is a globally integrated aluminium Group that is mining bauxite in Sierra Leone through its subsidiary, Sierra Mineral Holdings 1 Limited (SMHL). The bauxite is shipped from Nitti Port located on the Shebra river, about 45 nautical miles from the coast. Due to the limited draft on theriver and the unavailability of transhipment facilities offshore, SMHL has been using barges and vessels of maximum
55,000 MTS DWT to ship bauxite from Nitti port. This
makes bauxite from SMHL generally uncompetitive. Commodities trader Asia Energy International Corporation (AEIC) and its offtaker Shandong Zhitian Supply Chain Management Company (SZSCMC) contacted SLNSC/ Turner Marine and based on a collaborative agreement between SLNSC and Turner Marine, Turner Marine made an offer which has been accepted by Vitmetco SHML.
A total of about 368,000 MTS of bauxite were successfully transshipped by Turner Marine between June and July 2022.
Additional projected are expected in the last quarter of the year after the rainy season in Sierra Leone
